Hand In Hand is an after school program that serves middle school students with homework assistance and intervention services. The program serves three middle schools; Newport Middle School, Broad Creek Middle School and Morehead Middle School and a total of 90 students. This program is also partnering with The Boys and Girls Clubs of Coastal Carolina, to offer activities to enrich physical, social and emotional growth as well as supporting academic success. After two hours of after school guided academic support, participants in the "Hand In Hand" program are offered an additional two hours of Boys and Girls Club activities.
Student achievement was recently celebrated. Our affiliate recognized students showing the most improvement during the 2nd 9-weeks of the school year in two of our middle schools on February 9 and 10, 2011. Two students, both "Hand In Hand" After School Program participants, received recognition for their hard work, academic achievement and excellent attendance. Dylan Smith, an eighth grader from Broad Creek Middle School and Zachary Miller a seventh grader from Newport Middle School were recognized as "Student of the 9wks". Each student improved in one or more core subjects by as much as two letter grades. They were presented an engraved plaque and a gift card from Wal Mart. An after school celebration was held in their honor with fellow classmates, teachers, administration and parents joining in the recognition. Both schools had reason for celebration. They both have shown great improvement over the last 9weeks grading period. Broad Creek Middle Hand In Hand participants improved by 21% from last 9weeks, they went from showing 71% to 92% improvement! Newport Middle School went from 88% last 9weeks to 97% improvement this 9weeks!
Perfect attendance was celebrated as well. The following students had perfect attendance for one month or more: from Broad Creek Middle School; Sean Wallace, Jenny Wise, Dylan Smith, Brendan McKinley, Devin Cannon and JaQwuan Hughes and from Newport Middle School; Patrick Todd, Autumn Gilliland, Rebecca Ororke, Brendon Fesperman, Anthoney Swisher and Sam Masslock.
Morehead Middle School's "Hand In Hand" After School Program celebrated its "Student of the 12 Weeks" on March 23, 2011. Ledyi De La Cruz was presented with an engraved plaque and a gift card to Walmart in recognition of her academic improvement this past grading period. She improved in two of her core subjects, Language Arts and Math. We also celebrated the overall improvement of the program participants. Out of 19 participants in the "Hand In Hand" program, 15 showed improvement! Certificates were given to Poe Poe Khaing, who made all A's and 5 students; Roxanne Hester, Micheal Picoritti, Eikah Khaing, Eikah Tun and Dania De La Cruz who made A/B honor roll. Perfect attendance was also celebrated. Two students , Poe Poe Khaing and Roxanne Hester were awarded certificates for perfect attendance since the program started in October . The following were recognized for perfect attendance for one or more months: Hailey Smith, Zachery Smith, Daisy Lopez, Kelly Lyon, Jessica De La Rosa, Mickey Mitchell, Eikah Tun and Eikah Khaing.
